John F. Gruden Jr., 84, of Meadow Lands, died at 4:10 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2007.
He was born April 21, 1923, in Meadow Lands, a son of John and Jennie Troha Gruden Sr.
Mr. Gruden was a member of Miraculous Medal Church. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and was a church usher.
Mr. Gruden was also a member of SNPJ Lodge 138, KSKJ St. Jerome Lodge 153, both of Strabane, and the Bears Club. He was a charter member of Chartiers Township Volunteer Fire Department and was a former member of Chartiers Township Planning Commission.
He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School and was a big polka fan.
During World War II, Mr. Gruden served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater in Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe.
On May 13, 1950, he married Rosalie Waypa, who died September 9, 1981.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas (Denise) Gruden of Springfield, Ohio, and James (Marian) Gruden of Centerville, Ohio; two daughters, Bernadette (James) Charlton of Bethel Park and Mary Ann (Robert) Gruden Trujillo of McMurray; two sisters, Albina (Sam) Angott of Washington and Frances Dixon of Meadow Lands; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, where a blessing service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 13, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Miraculous Medal Church, Meadow Lands, with Father John O'Shea as celebrant. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Full military rites will be accorded by the honor guards of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston.
