He was born to Clarence Newhouse and "Mimi" Amy Mabel Landru Newhouse on Oct 31, 1920 in Brandon, Douglas County, MN, the oldest of three sons. His brothers were Halvor Orlando "Ole" Newhouse (May 24, 1922 - Mar. 20, 1989) and Lorne Rodney Newhouse (Dec. 11, 1925 - Sep. 28, 1992).

Gilfred served in the military in World War II. He was then ordained as a Lutheran minister. Following this, he completed a 30 year career in the Air Force as a military chaplain.

He was married to Frances JoAnn Melcher on 20 Aug 1942. They had three daughters, Diane, Jean and Marilyn.
