Obituary in the Fairbanks, Alaska "Daily News-Miner" newspaper, dated Tuesday, October 27, 2009, page B-2:

"Charles Homer Wallen Jr. was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Oak Park, Illinois. He died at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Oct. 14, 2009.

Charlie was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until his retirement in 1966. He married Billie L. (Honeycutt) Partin on April 9, 1966. They moved to Fairbanks in 1966, and lived there until 1978 when they moved to Montrose, Colorado. While living in Alaska, Charlie worked for the NASA satellite tracking site. Shortly after moving to Montrose, Charlie began his love of genealogy. This interest stayed with him for the rest of his life. Family members owe him a debt of gratitude for his long hours spent in research and data recording. The Wallens moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, in 1993. Charlie's beloved wife, Billie, passed away on Oct. 4, 1998. Charlie spent the last years of his life at Comfort Care. He loved to cook and share recipes. The creative flair that he had for this hobby was a great joy for him. He never failed to amuse all who would listen with many stories of his life adventures and places he had lived.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Brown; and brother, James Wallen.

Survivors include his four children, Barbara Redenz of Hertford, N.C., Jo Ann Leek of Moosic, Pa., Dee Wallen of Chesapeake, Va., and Charles H. Wallen III of Elizabeth City, N.C.; stepchildren, Sheila VanWormer of Gassville, Ark. and Michael Partin of Brighton, Tenn.; sister, Betty Putnam of Washington, Ind.; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and extended family members.

Thank you to the staff of Comfort Care and St. Mary's Hospital for taking such good care of Charlie. Billie and Charlie were very blessed to have the love and friendship of Jeff and Trish Vagneur and Miles and Patsy LaHue."

Written for me (Lisa Wallen Logsdon) by Charlie himself:

"I enlisted in the U.S. Navy March 4, 1943 at the age of 16 in Los Angles, Los Angles Co., California. Went to Boot Camp in San Diego, San Diego Co., California. Spent from August 1943 until September 1946 in the Pacific theater of war. Retired from the U.S. Navy July 1, 1966 in Sanford, Seminole Co., Florida

Went to work at a N.A.S.A Satellite tracking site thirteen miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska, September 22, 1966. Left Fairbanks July 1st, 1978 and moved to Montrose, Colorado.

These are the two most significant events in my adult life, other than marrying Billie, whose wishes became the focal point of everything I did."

Charlie was an avid genealogist and he and I were a close team in family research for over 11 years. He was my father's first cousin and my very dear friend.
