Through his late birth, he was excluded from active government and was a "apanagierter" prince. Via the death of his brother without issue Frederick I's three sons became ruling duke of Mecklenburg [-Schwerin] one after the other. In 1667 Frederick became Domherr of Strasbourg Cathedral and from 1669 lived in the family castle in Grabow. After a fire in the castle his remains were re-buried in the Schelfkirche St. Nikolai in Schwerin on 3 June 1725.
