Shubal G. Worth was killed in the Civil War May 11, 1864 by a sharpshooter near Richmond.

The Adjutant of the 2nd NC Cavalry Regiment, Shubal G. Worth of Asheboro, NC was killed in a charge made by that Regiment against the enemy at Winston's, 14 miles west of Richmond, on the 11th day of May during the Spotsylvania Campaign. Adjutant Worth was a brave and accomplished officer. His gallantry on the field was much noticed and his efficiency was marked. At the commencement of the war "Shub Worth's Company" was well known in the troops of our noble old State.
His constitution was frail, and after nearly two years of the most arduous service he was forced to resign his position and go home. Not satisfied with the service he had rendered his country, Capt. Worth went to volunteer as aid to General Pettigrew, and again gave out in service.
Gov. Vance, knowing this young officer's ability, appointed him Lt. Col. of the Home Guards of Randolph County, where his efficient service won for him an enviable fame. Having served in this capacity but a few months, he was tendered the position of Adjutant of the 2d NC Cavalry, by the Colonel of that Regiment and again did this patriotic man enter the field of strife. A few short months of service and the accomplished Adjutant of the 2nd was no more.
