John's parents, Thomas and Isabella Brownley, grew to maturity in Scotland and were married there, sailing to America for their wedding trip. John D. Brownley served his country during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private, mustering in on November 13, 1861. John was promoted to corporal on July 30, 1863. On July 22, 1864 he was taken prisoner and sent to Andersonville Prision, Georgia. He was exchanged in Atlanta on September 19, 1864. He was mustered out on August 14, 1865 in Little Rock, Arkansas. John and Mary moved to Carroll Co. MO in the fall of 1869.
