Emmett R. Basham
PRINCETON - Emmett R. Basham of 40 Crestview Drive, Princeton, passed away July 2, 2005 at his home.
Born Feb. 14, 1913 in Lashmeet, he was a son of the late Albert and Doshia Bailey Basham.
A once active and familiar figure of the Spanishburg- Princeton area, he and his wife, Lorene lived in Spanishburg for more than 50 years. In 1994, they relocated to Princeton. For more than 50 years he has been a member of Spanishburg United Methodist Church where he served as chair person of the Administrative Council, served in various committees and participated in many programs and activities of the church.
In 1977 he retired from the Mercer Co. Board of Education after 27 years of service. Twenty-two of those years he was a school bus driver and worked five years in the maintenance department. He was employed by the Turkey Gap Coal Company at Dott in the 1940s for several years. He was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Army.
He served on the supervisors Board of Southern Conservation District for several years. He was chair person of the Mercer Co. Farm Service Agency where he was presented with a certificate for 30 years of Co. service. He also served as chairperson and committee member of the McDowell Mercer Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service during its existence. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Woodmen of the World, the Shawnee Park Way Association and the Mercer Co. Retired Teachers Association. He served on the East River Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors.
He held the office of Treasurer for Spanishburg Ruritan Club for several years. In 2003 he had a record of 34 years perfect attendance. He was presented with a "Perfect Attendance and Faithful Service" plaque by the club.
He had the respect and admiration of the family and friends for his honesty, decency and trust worthiness. He will be remembered for his dedication in support of civic and community efforts. He believed it was not only a duty but a privilege to support and serve the community and mankind. He had wisdom that knew no bounds. His wisdom was God given, not obtained from books. He was an avid fan of Bluegrass music. He was known through out the area for his knowledge of honey bees which been an enjoyable hobby since his early years. Also, he had a fondness for farming, owning and riding saddle horses. A favorite reading of his is by an ? author is titled, "After Work." "Lord when thou see that my work is done let me not linger on, but with a word just bid me home and I will come right gladly. Yea, right gladly will I come." One of his most favorite scriptures was Hebrews 13:5-8.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Erie, Earl and Everett Basham; and sister, Edie Norfleet.
Survivors include his loving, care-giving wife for more than 67 years, Lorene Cole Basham; two sisters, Mrs. Elma Farley of Spanishburg and Mrs. Eva French of Mullens; a special care giving niece, Kaye Smith and husband, Kennith of Spanishburg; special nephews, "Chuck" Cole Craig, Smith and wife, Stacy; special nieces, Kristi Taylor and Joyce Meadows and many other special nieces and nephews whose visits brought him much pleasure.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 4, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Casper Dalton, Jr. and Richard Godfrey officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of the Nativity of Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, Mercer Co., WV.
Serving as pallbearers will be Curtis Murphy, "Chuck" Cole, Craig Smith, Ferlin Basham, Sherell Basham, Kennith Smith, Earl Basham Jr. and Richard Blackwood.
