In the 1985, they were strip mining coal adjacent to this cemetery. The only Gaines graves were Edmund and Ann, which were discovered after a quick search.

Ann was the daughter of James Whitson and Elizabeth Toney. She married Edmund Thomas Gaines in 1831 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

Note: According to notes written by her father-in-law, she was born and died on different dates than given on her grave marker. Those dates were: born 1814 and died 12 February 1862.
