White served in the Civil War being a member of the Charleston Light Dragoons, Which did duty in South Carolina and later in Virginia. At the battle of Hawe's Shop he was wounded and captured, being taken prisoner to Elmira, New York where he remained until the end of the war. He was for nearly twenty four years the quartermaster of the Citadel. He was born at Moss Grove plantation in St. John's Berkeley.
