Until the age of 24, he remained in Ohio and graduated from the Savanah Academy in Ashland County. He taught school, a portion of the time while he was attending Savanah. At 13 he left home and engaged in carpentry and the painting business. At 25 he moved to Kansas, where he learned photography, and in 1888 opened the first photography studio in Waterville, Douglas County WA. In 1895 he secured 80 acres of land on the Entiat River where he grew alfalfa, fruit and vegetables. In April 1901 he opened a general merchandise store in Entiat.
