Eugene was the only child of Emmeline Blanche Woodward and James Harvey Harris. This baby's father was born in Franklin County, Massachusetts and his mother in Worchester County.

They were married 29 July 1843 at New Salem, Massachusetts, when they were both only 15.

His mother was a school teacher at age 14 and a recent convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as was his father.

Tiny Eugene was born shortly after their move to Nauvoo and lived just a month and one week. The ancient burial record of Nauvoo listed his name and the description, "Died of chill fever at the age of 1 mos and 7 das."

Shortly after his death, His paternal grandparents left the Church and his father also left Nauvoo in search of employment, never to return. It was later learned that he died in a sailing accident in the Indian Ocean. It was thought he sought work on the ship or was "shanghaied" as an unwilling deck hand.

His mother, Emmeline, was left destitute and relying on the friends in the Mormon community where she was able to make do, by returning to teaching. She traveled west with them to the Salt Lake Valley in Utah Territory.

She would eventually go on to became a very celebrated woman.
