Verna Louise Hash Holcroft, 81, of Madison, died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at Hickory Creek of Madison.

She was born July 26, 1928, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Leonard and Margaret Muster Hash. She lived all of her life in Jefferson County and was a 1946 graduate of Hanover High School. Early in life, she worked for Von Ewing Dairy in downtown Madison and Steinhardt-Hanson for several years. She also worked in the cafeteria of the Madison Junior High School downtown. She retired after 27 years of service with the Madison State Hospital as a certified attendant. She was a life member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was a member of First Baptist Church of Madison for more than 50 years. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting, working with her flowers, gardening and cooking.

She is survived by her husband William A. "Bill" Holcroft, whom she married May 18, 1946; two sons, Ronald Holcroft and Jeffrey Holcroft, both of Madison; one sister, Bea Rusk of Madison; one brother, Keith Hash of Wiggam, Ga.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her father, who died June 1961; her mother, who died in November 1991; one brother, Glenn Hash, who died in December 1990; one nephew; and one niece.

The funeral was at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial was in Springdale Cemetery.
