Charles Edward A'Lee was born at Lanlawren Gate in Lansallos parish, on the south-east coast of Cornwall, England. He was the third child of Thomas John A'Lee & Elizabeth Manning A'Lee (nee Hender.)
He served in the British Navy during WW1 along with two of his brothers, he was invalided out of the Navy in 1921.
He emigrated to Canada in 1924 and settled in Mallorytown. He was never to return to Cornwall but was never forgotten by his family there.
