HERBERT A.COFFEEN
DIES IN CALIFORNIA
Herbert Allen Coffoen, owner of the Teepee store, and citizen who had been prominent in the development of the Sheridan country, died at Pasadena, Cal., yesterday afternoon, where he had been sojourning several months. Death was due to a complication of diseases. Mr. Coffeen suffered his first breakdown in health a little more than two years ago and since that time he had undergone a gradual decline. A little more than a year ago his condition became such that he was required to give up his business activities. He was born at Bement, 111., March 11, 1869, being the son of the late Henry A. Coffeen, former congressman from Wyoming. He was educated at Monmouth college at Monmouth, 111. He came to Sheridan In 1884, where he had since made his residence. Shortly after coming to Sheridan, Mr. Coffeen engaged in business with his father and was afterward engaged in other mercantile enterprises. The enterprise which contributed much to his success, however, was the Teepee store, which he had conducted for a number of years and which he owned at the time of his death. He became known nationally as an Indian collector and connoisseur of western art. His collection of Navajo blankets was one of the finest in the country, and perhaps no man in the northwest had a more intimate knowledge of Indian life than Mr. Coffeen. His sympathetic understanding of the Indians caused them to hold him in high regard. He enjoyed an intimate acquaintanceship with Dr. George Bird Grinnell, Major McLaughlin, and many other noted writers of Indian literature. His personal acquaintance extended to a number of nationally known artihts, including Remington, Schryvogel, Hanson, Rollins. Sharp and a number of others.
Mr. Coffeen believed intensely in a great future for Sheridan and he was ardently devoted to the idea of a bigger and better city. This characteristic found expression in his work in the Sheridan Commercial club, to
which he devoted a great deal of his best thought and effort. He was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias lodge. He was married July 27, 1892, to Miss Jennie Heald, who, with three sons, Donald, John and Henry, survive him. The body will arrive from Pasadena Sunday night, and the funeral will take place Monday morning at 10 o'clock at the residence of Edward Gillette, 220 Coffeen avenue.

Henry Coffeen was the plot owner as per cemetery records.
