Leroy E. Harsin, 87, of Lexington, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at King's Daughters' Hospital.

He was born May 13, 1922, in Dupont near the Big Creek area, the son of Shirley and Agnes B. Smart. He attended Big Creek Grade School and graduated from North Madison High School. He graduated from Hanover College in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in science. He retired in 1978 from Jefferson Proving Ground, where he was a proof technician. He worked at the Charlestown Powder Plant from 1941 to 1943. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Liberty Christian Church. He was Past Master of Hanover Masonic Lodge No. 652, Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star No. 525 and a member of the JPG Heritage Partnership. He was a former member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the JPG Conservation Association. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and looking for mushrooms and herbs.

He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Rea Harsin, whom he married Oct. 12, 1940; one daughter, Joyce A. Harsin of Lexington; three sons, Paul L. Harsin of Lebanon, and Ronald N. Harsin and Maurice Harsin, both of Lexington; one brother, Dr. Harold Harsin of Millstadt, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother, Earl Melvin Harsin; and one sister, Lorraine Smith.

The funeral was at Vail-Holt Funeral Home Hanover Chapel. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery.
