John Wesley Smith, died at the Soldiers' Home in Danville December 6, 1924 (being 94 years, 6 months, 20 days old) following a short illness. He had been staying at the Soldiers Home in Quincy and came to Monticello two weeks preceding his death for a visit with his children. He took sick while here and was removed to the hospital in Danville.

He was born in Springfield MA on May 16, 1830. His early life was spent in Springfield MA and New York City. He came West in 1854, stopping in Chicago on October 1st of that year but remained there only a few days, then went to St Louis. He later came to Oconee, Shelby County, IL. On October 13, 1856 he married Sarah Ann Lamar, being one of the couples to participate in a double wedding. The other couple J. A. Morgan and Hannah H. Hankinson lived to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Smith lived to pass their 61st anniversary; Mrs. Smith died February 19, 1918.

He came to Bement in 1866 where he spent the remainder of his life. He leaves three children: Mrs. Docia L. Davis, Ft Morgan CO; Mrs. Ella R. Taylor and Charles W. Smith, Monticello; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Smith enlisted in Co. G, 5th IL Cavalry Volunteers on September 1861 to serve three years; he was discharged December 31, 1863 and the following day re-enlisted for three years more. At the close of the war he had served four years and two months, receiving his final discharge October 27, 1865.
