Sister Mary Alexia, a member of the Sisters of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, died at Saint Mary’s Hospital February 4,1952. She was 84 years old. Sister Mary Alexia (Frances Mayer) was born January 12, 1868 at Jordan, Minnesota. On July 24, she was admitted to the Novitiate of the sisters of Saint Francis from Saints Peter and Paul parish, Glencoe, MN. Sister Alexia early gave evidence of skill as a teacher and it was to this work that she devoted all the years of her active religious life. Her first teaching assignment was to the old Academy of our Lady of Lourdes which had been opened in Rochester in 1877; during the year 1890-91 she taught at St. John’s school, Rochester. Sister Alexia also served as a teacher in schools conducted by her order at Ironton, Cincinnati and Portsmouth, Ohio. She was religious superior and principal during the years she was assigned to Minnesota schools in St. Peter, Adrian, Caledonia, Iona and St. James. In the fall of 1935 failing health made it necessary to give up teaching and she came to the Sisters’ infirmary at St. Mary’s hospital. Here Sister Alexia assisted with many lighter duties throughout the years of her retirement. Sister Alexia had been seriously ill since last December. In the summer of 1921 Sister Alexia was elected as one of the four General Councilors of her Order and held this office for six years. On June 16, 1951, Sister Alexia celebrated the diamond jubilee of her religious profession as a Sister of Saint Francis. She is survived by one sister, Sister Mary Rudolph, Saint Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were held from the Motherhouse Chapel in Rochester Feb. 7. Several priests participated in the service. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
