Peter Berg was born in Germany in 1847 and at the age of four came to the United States with his parents Adam Berg and Anna Margaretha Engelmann Berg. He enlisted as drummer boy in the 16th Ohio Volunteers when 13 years old, serving throughout the Civil War and marching with Sherman to the sea. His father was captured and held a prisoner in Andersonville prison through most of the war.
After the war Peter Berg obtained a position in the Cincinnati post office, later becoming a member of the police department. Within five years he had worked his way up to the rank of lieutenant, holding that position for twenty three years. He retired in 1906 on the account of ill health.
He was head of the Boy Scouts drum corps of Cincinnati.
Mr. Berg died at the age of 75 years. He was well known in Antigo,having been a frequent visitor at the home of his son Edwin, who lived there for sixteen years.
Surviving are his widow, two sons, Walter of Cincinnati, and Edward, of Antigo, two daughters Gertrude and Edna of Cincinnati.
Funeral services were held at memorial hall and were in charge of the Grand Army of the Republic. The body lay in state for one day. Burial was in the Spring Grove cemetery.
