He was born on December 12, 1923, in Blackwell Mo. in St. Francois County. He graduated from Bonne Terre High School, served as an Army tank driver in Europe during World War II under George Patton and graduated from the Washington University School of Law.

In 1958, he was elected state Senator & served Jefferson County in that capacity from 1959 to 1975.

He ran unsuccessfully for Missouri Gov. in 1972. In 1991, Gov. John Ashcroft appointed him to become an associate circuit judge in Hillsboro.
