BENNINGTON -- Ernest F. Shepard, 76, a resident of East Road, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at the Vermont Veterans Home following a long illness.
Born in Albion, Mich., Jan. 24, 1929, he was the son of the late Arthur and Marion (Winslow) Shepard. He received his education in the Albion schools. Ernie was a veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Air Force from Jan. 25, 1946, until Dec. 21, 1948, and was a recipient of the World War II victory medal.
He married the former Patricia Monroe Ripley in Bennington on Oct. 24, 1986.
For many years Ernie was employed by the William E. Dailey company in Shaftsbury as a concrete estimator. In earlier years he worked as a mason,
Ernie loved fishing on the Battenkill, flying his plane and traveling with his family in his motor home. His favorite pastime was spending time with family and friends and playing with his grandson, Scott.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Shepard of Bennington; three daughters, a son, a stepdaughter, two stepsons, three grandchildren, a brother and sister-in-law, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ernie was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Shepard; a sister, June Hewit; and two brothers, Robert and John Shepard.
At Ernie's request his remains will be donated to the anatomical gift program at Albany Medical College.
Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Contributions in Ernest F. Shepard's memory may be made to either the Bennington Project Independence Building Fund or the Green Mountain Alzheimers Foundation through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
