Rafael E. Montoya, age 86, a lifetime resident of Rains-ville, N.M., passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Oct.20, 2009, at St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe, N.M.

He was born on June 25, 1923, in Lucero, N.M., to the late Demetrio and Adelaida Montoya.

He was united in marriage on Jan. 12, 1945, in Rainsville, N.M., to Lupita Pacheco.

He retired from the Mora Independent Schools where he was employed for 25 years as Bus Driver. He was a former worker at the Gilman mines in Colorado and the N.M. state penitentiary in Santa Fe, also worked as a rock crusher operator and was a lifetime rancher. He enjoyed spending time with his family and going to the casinos.

He was a lifetime Catholic, member of the St. Gertrude's Church in Mora, N.M.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Demetrio and Adelaida Montoya; brothers: Ambrosio Montoya and George Montoya; sisters: Ramitos Medina and Emilia Salazar; son-in-law: Charlie "Rooster" Trujillo.

He is survived by his loving wife: Lupita Montoya of the family home in Rainsville, N.M.; daughters: Addie Trujillo of Ledoux, N.M.; Connie Cruz and husband Benji of Holman, N.M.; Sons: Ralph Montoya, David Montoya and wife Cleo and Clarence Montoya and wife Yvonne all of Rainsville; Chester Montoya and wife Diana of Albuquerque; Richard Montoya and wife Kelli of Grants, N.M.; Paul Montoya of Rainsville; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister: Audilia De Tevis of Wagon Mound, N.M.; numerous brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Rosary devotional services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, at St. Gertrude's Church in Mora, N.M.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26 at St. Gertrude's Church in Mora, with Father John McHugh as celebrant.

Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Rainsville, with the following serving as casket bearers: Charles Trujillo, Ralph Montoya, Greg Montoya, Alfonso Montoya, Brian Montoya, Ryan Cruz and Austin Montoya. Serving as honorary bearers will be all his remaining grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
