Joseph Herman Siemens passed away early Saturday morning, October 17, 2009, at the age of 90.
Mr. Siemens was an All-City football and track standout from DeVilbiss High School in Toledo from 1934 to 1938, who helped DeVilbiss win the City Championship in 1938.
He played football at the University of Toledo from 1938-1940, lettering in 1939 and 1940. Mr. Siemens was the oldest living UT football letterman.
At Toledo, he played for the Clarence "Doc" Spears, who is a member of the College Football hall of fame. Those teams from 1939-1940 had a record of 19-9-1.
Mr. Siemens left Toledo in 1941 to fight in the Pacific Theater in World War II aboard the USS Alfred J. Lyon, which was a Liberty ship of the 6th Aircraft Repair Unit (Floating).
Mr. Siemens fought in many of the major battles, including Tarawa, the Philippines, Luzon and Okinawa. Joe Siemens and the rest of the crew of the Alfred J. Lyon witnessed the Japanese surrender to MacArthur taking place on the battleship Missouri, September 2, 1945.
Joe Siemens received the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Ribbon and the Victory Medal World War II. At the time of demobilization Mr. Siemens was a Corporal 1st Class.
He returned from the occupation of Japan to a successful career with Ohio Bell/ AT&T from which he retired in 1985 after 40 years service.
Joe was an active member of Christ Presbyterian Church. Over the years he served as a Trustee, a Deacon, and an Elder. He was a life long member of the choir having been blessed with a beautiful tenor voice.
In addition, Joe was a 33 degree Mason, and a Shriner singing with the Shriners Chanter group and performing at various events around the Toledo area. He especially enjoyed the Barber shop Quartet of which he was a part.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eleanor Siemens; his daughter, Beverly Jo Conway; his stepdaughters, Carol Baker, Nancy Rupli, and Tracy Malhoit; his grandsons, Scott Phillipps and Robert Phillipps; his step-grandsons, Jason Heath, Brian Heath, Jennifer Stolts, Joshua Rupli, Molly Rupli, Zachary Rupli, Corey Malhoit, and Sam Malhoit; his great-grandchildren, Brooke, Braden, Carter, Kasey, and David Phillipps; and his step-great-grand-children, Aiden and Reagan Heath, Mekala Stults, Joslyn Roth, and Jacob and James Rupli.
The family will receive friends for visitation at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main, Sylvania, OH on Friday, October 23, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Christ Presbyterian Church, 4225 W. Sylvania, Toledo, OH on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., Pastor Tom G. Schwartz officiating. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park Cemetery.
