" William Bowyer one of the county's most substantial citizens dies in the Marlboro County General hospital yesterday morning at 4:55. He had been in failing health for about ten months and had been in the hospital for the past four weeks. Brights disease with complications is said to have been the cause of death.

The deceased was said to have been in his seventy-sixth year, having been born in Mississippi January 28th 1856. His family moved to Marlboro County when he was a mere child and practically all of his long life was spent in and around Bennettsville.

Mr. Bowyer was married to Miss Mary Cope of this county in 1878 and fourteen children were born to this union, ten of whom are still living. The mother, having died September 4, 1925. The surviving children, six sons and four daughters are: B. B. Bowyer, North Carolina; C.S. Bowyer-Osteen, NC; Edgar Bowyer, Atlanta, Ga; M.T. Bowyer, Miami, Fla; S.J. Bowyer, Bennettsville; William C. Bowyer, U.S.N. [United States Navy]; Miss Willie Bowyer, Wilmington, N.C.; Mrs. A. B. Kanipe, Atlanta, Ga; Mrs. Fred E. Greene, Greensboro, N.C.; Mrs. W.J. Inglis, Greenwood; he also leaves one brother L.M. Bowyer, Pensacola, Fla.

The deceased was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and lived true to the teachings of his church. He was a conscientious Christian, exemplifying in his daily life the teachings of the master. He was highly esteemed and loved by all who knew him.

Mr. Bowyer had the misfortune of loosing both of his arms which were blown off below the elbow by the confederate cannons on the courthouse square in a Hampton celebration in 1880. However he faced life courageously and learned to do for hisself as well as most men with both arms.

Funeral services will be held in the Whitner Funeral parlors this morning at 11:00 conducted by the Revs. W. Roy Phillips and J.S. Garner, pastors of the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches respectively. Interment will follow at Beauty Spot Cemetery, near his home, three miles east of Bennettsville.
