Richard Dix "R.D." Danford Sr., 89, died Wednesday (April 14, 2010) at Satilla Care Center, following an illness.

He was born Oct. 24, 1920, to the late Andrew and Ninnie Danford, in Waycross. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Willie, Andrew and Ruth "Reolure" and is survived by a brother, Ernest "Skeeter" Danford.

He accepted the Baptist faith in 1930 at Greater St. Paul Baptist Church where he remained a devoted member until his transition. He graduated from Center High School in 1939 with honors and attended North Carolina A&T University majoring in tailoring. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served his country honorably on the USS Lake Champlain during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He married Gladys Lee Rogers, of Thomasville, Aug. 1, 1944, and was wedded for 62 years until her transition May 24, 2007. He was the patriarch of six children, Richard (Joyce), Barbara(James) Jordan, Christopher, Christine Fletcher, Ralph, Conniestene (Gene) Beverly; grandchildren, Tiffany (Trennis) Harvey, Traci (Mert) Harris, James(Shaana) Jordan, John Mitchell III, Jason (Shmara) Mitchell, India Jackson, Alondra Hubbard, Nikia(Demetric) Moore, Erika (Berry) Harmon, Faith Danford, Antoine Danford, Krystal Danford, Christopher Danford Jr., Christian Danford, Brandon Moore, Morgan Danford, Richard Danford III, Wesley Belle Beverly; greatgrandchildren, Jakquelyn Mitchell, Jayden Moore, Tyler Davis and
Kaelin Danford, Wesley and Isaiah Mitchell, Jaxon and Bryson Harris, Trenyce and Jordyn Harvey, and James III and Peyton Jordan.

He opened Elite Cleaners in 1947 at 702 Oak St., later relocating to Folks Street. In 1964, he moved the business to 963 McDonald St. where it remains the oldest African American owned business in Waycross. He supplemented the family income by joining ITT Rayonier Company in Jesup and maintained the rigorous pace, commuting to Jesup for 24 years and establishing his successful business. He continued to work at Danford Cleaners until the age of 89. He was dedicated to Greater St.Paul Missionary Baptist Church and served as deacon, trustee, assistant superintendent of the Sunday School, and member of the Layman's Association. He was also a Mason. He joined the heavenly angels at 12:50 p.m. April 14, 2010.

In addition to his brother and his children, he will be missed by his sisters-in-law, Corine Wilson, Virginia Wilson, Emma (Harold Hill), Fannie Johnson, Belle Rogers, and brothers-in-law, Napoleon Rogers and James Lary; and will also be greatly missed by his best friend and Christian brother, Joseph Rogers.

"Well done, a good and faithful servant." The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 1110 Pittman St., with the Rev. Johnny Arnold officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday beginning at 6 p.m. at Welch and Brinkley Mortuary. Friends and relatives are being received at the family residence. Following interment, the family will receive friends at Greater St. Paul Baptist Church in the social hall.
