Mel received an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Colorado. He was the Founder/Chairman of Coleman Natural Meats, President and CEO of Coleman Ranches Inc., and a fourth generation rancher in Saguache, Colorado. He served in the Navy on the USS Vicksburg during WWII. Mel served his nation throughout the years in many civic endeavors. He never met a stranger, and was devoted to his family and to the land. He was a man of integrity and was loyal and honest. He always "rode the higher range".

He married Pauline "Polly" Curtis on 28 June 1947; they had the following children: Glen M., Jr, Gregory C. and Dianne (Montonari).
