Legendary Dancer. One of the greatest male dancers of his era. He studied dancing at the St. Petersburg Imperial School of Ballet beginning in 1898 and he made his debut in the Maryinsky Theater in 1907. He traveled with Sergei Diaghilev's ballet company (Ballet Russes) to Paris in 1909 and had great international success until 1913. He married a ballet student (Romola de Pulszky) with the company that same year and Diaghilev dismissed him. Nijinsky rejoined the company in the United States in 1916, dancing as brilliantly as ever. In 1919, at the age of 29, Nijinsky retired from the stage, owing to a nervous breakdown, which was diagnosed as schizophrenia. He lived from 1919 until 1950 in Switzerland, France, and England, and died in London in 1950.
