Janice W. von Riesen, age 87, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Monday evening, October 19, 2009, at the Meadowlark Hills-Bramlage House in Manhattan.

Mrs. von Riesen was born on October 6, 1922, in Marysville, Kansas, the daughter of John Thomas and Nelle Bernice (Mayer) Warders. She graduated from Marysville High School in 1940 and from Baker University in 1946.

On April 4, 1948, in Marysville, she was united in marriage to David R. von Riesen. They moved to Manhattan in 1950 to make their home.

Mrs. von Riesen taught English for two years in Marion, Kansas and upon moving to Manhattan went to work for Blaker's Studio Royal. She later was employed by Campbell's Gift Shop in Manhattan for 36 years.

She was a very active member with the First United Methodist Church serving on numerous committees and volunteering her time on many projects. She also was a member of the Pilot Club of Manhattan, Beta Sigma Phi (to which she recently received her 60 year recognition), Sertoma, American Association of University Women, P.E.O., Riley County Historical Society, Phi Mu Sorority at Baker University, and the Mercy Regional Health Center Auxiliary.

Following World War II Mr. and Mrs. von Riesen sponsored a civilian victim, Joseph Mignon, from Belgium through the "Foster Parent" plan, and maintained that relationship for more than 60 years.

Mrs. von Riesen is survived by two brothers: Thomas Warders and his wife Lois of Ft. Collins. Colorado, and Donald Warders, Lawrence, Kansas; two sisters-in-law: Joan Sorrick, Washington, Kansas, and Suzette von Riesen, Ft. Collins, Colorado; four nephews and five nieces; and several great nephews and great nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband on February 14, 1994.

The family will receive friends during a visitation from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan with Reverend Kay Scarbrough officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Marysville City Cemetery in Marysville, Kansas.
