Mattie Opie was a well known poet and author. She was the youngest child of James and Grace (Rowe) Opie of Cornwall, England. She was born and raised in Donaldson, PA. The Opies were relatives of John Opie, the artist and husband of Amelia Opie, the poetess. Mattie's mother was a descendant of Nicholas Rowe, English dramatist and laureate under King George I.

Author mourned at Hollywood - Body of Miss Martha Jane Opie to rest in Pennsylvania

HOLLYWOOD, April 14 - citizens of this community mourned the loss of Miss Martha Jane Opie Tuesday, as the body of the 80-year-old author and poet who died in Ft. Lauderdale late last Saturday night, was sent to Tremont, Pa., for burial.
Born in Donaldson, Pa., Miss Opie had spent a large number of her declining years in Hollywood where she owned residences on Madison Street in the city and on Authur Street at the beach. She also held a number of other properties here. In her heart was always a tender spot for the deserving unfortunate and much of the material resources which had been gained from her years at writing were spent upon bettering the conditions of those who were unable to help themselves.
Miss Opie was a graduate of Minersville, Pa. State Teachers College and had studied the violin at the Conservatory of Music in London, England. For 17 years, she was a publisher of the Williamson, Pa., Times. Her travels carried her throughout Japan, China and the Holy Land.
A life-long member of the Methodist church, she lectured for the Methodist Missionary society upon her return from these excursions.
Included among her contributions to American contemporary literature were her books; "The Garden of Memories" and "Daily Gleanings" and the "Book of Books." She was a member of the American Society of Pen Women and was listed in the London Onthology and the Whos Who of North American Authors. She was a prolific writer of poems and her last, which she had written recently, was entitled "Resolutions."

Surviving are 12 nieces and nephews, including; Dr. H. Earl Humbert, Mrs. Walter G. Uptegrave, Col. G. F. Humbert, Dr. James O. Humbert, Dr. F. C. Humbert, J. Lewis Humbert, Mrs. Thomas E. Martin, Mrs. Ed Steiner, James Opie, Hurd Opie, Howard Opie and Mrs. Rhea Opie Miller.
