Mrs. Melissa Allen

WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa., Dec.17

The death of Melissa Allen, which took place Friday evening at 11 o'clock was very sudden and a shock to the whole community, as she had been a life-long resident of the vicinity and was well and favorable known to all the elder residents this of this part of the county. Mrs. Allen, who had been ailing for a week past, was only though sick the past few days, and she appeared a little better of the attack of pleurisy which she had contracted last Friday evening when she retired. But it affected her heart and she passed away soon after going to bed. She was 71 years of age, and the daughter of William and Betsy Sweesy, early settlers of this section, and was born on the old Sweesy homestead east of town, when the woods was the order instead of cleared land and it was a couple of miles to the school house. Early in life she connected herself with the local Presbyterian church and has been a constant and attentive member for more than 50 years.

In 1872 she and Joseph Allen were united in marriage and have had a happy wedded life, and the following children survive, with the father: Edward, Audley, Albert, Clarles L. and Mrs. Joseph More, all residing in the near vicinity of the Allen homestead. The deceased is survived by the following brothers and sisters, David W. Sweesy, Mrs. Maxie Minner, Frances, wife of Thomas Forbes of the Eastside: Mrs. Elizabeth Hutchinson, Mrs. Marilda Ayers of New Castle and Mrs. Margaret Grove of Beaver.
