San Francisco Mayor. A native of Albany, New York, Alvord moved to California in 1850 and settled in San Francisco five years later. He founded the hardware store of Alvord & Co., which he owned until 1866. In 1871 Alvord was elected the 14th Mayor of San Francisco, serving until 1873. He was then appointed a commissioner of Golden Gate Park (1873 to 1882) and would later serve as a San Francisco police commissioner (1878 until 1899). From 1878 until his death Alvord was President of the Bank of California.
