FORMER ASHLAND RESIDENT PASSES

Mrs. Hattie Ritter Owings, whose father organized the First Baptist Church in Ashland, passed away at Newport, Wash., Feb 22 according to information received today from a daughter, Mrs. Owings, who was born on a farm near Jacksonville, would have been 81 years of age on June 13 of this year.

Mrs. Owings, whose parents were Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Ritter of Ashland, attended the old college at Ashland and there met George W. Owings to whom she married March 16, 1884, in the same home where she was born.

ACTIVE IN CHURCH

Mr. and Mrs. Owings spent their early married life at Ritter, Grant County, where they had a cattle ranch and general store. Returning to Southern Oregon in 1896, they remained for several years, buying the Eagle hotel at Eagle Point in 1909. From Eagle Point the couple went to Pendleton where they operated several apartment houses. Since 1944 Mrs. Owings had made her home in Newport.

The deceased had been a member of the Baptist Church since the age of 13 and also worked in the W.C.T.U. and belonged to the G.A.R. ladies in Pendleton.

Internment was in Pendleton beside her husband and a son, Willard. Surviving are two daughters and one son, Mrs. Carrie Walker of Fallon, Nevada, Mrs. Madege Findley of Newport and Ralph R. Owings of Tucson, Arizonia.
