Margaret Frances Kalb's parents were Anna K. Bartell (b. 19 Oct 1876) and George J. Kalb (b. 26 May 1877) who had married in 1901. Margaret, their only child, was baptized at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Essex, Maryland on 7 Oct 1906. Margaret was only five years old when her mother died on 3 Apr 1912 at age 35. Her father remarried five years later, on 29 Jan 1917.

George Kalb's second wife was Mary W. Bonjonia (19 Nov 1887 to 24 Jun 1973) who had been born in Virginia to Giovannie (Joseph) Bonjonia, an Italian immigrant, and his wife Pauline Wilson Funk who was a native of Virginia. Margaret couldn't have asked for a finer stepmother and by 1926 she had five loving half siblings: Mary (1918-1994), Helen (1920-1992), George (1921-2002), Grace (1924-2005) and Marian (b. 1926).

Twenty year-old Margaret Kalb married George Conrad Holdorf Jr. on 26 Oct 1926 at Sacred Heart Church in Baltimore, Maryland. George was a Baltimore City fireman as well as a talented amateur photographer and carpenter. The couple had three children: Margaret Catherine (b. 3 Jan 1928), Geraldine Mary (b. 18 Jul 1929) and Mary Claire (b. 25 Nov 1937).

On 8 Jan 1945, thirty-eight year-old Margaret Holdorf was taken by ambulance from her home at 3823 Foster Avenue and admitted to South Baltimore General Hospital. At the time her daughters were 17, 15 and 7 years old. Nine days later Margaret underwent a total hysterectomy and she remained in the hospital while she recovered from surgery. While Margaret was at SBGH her youngest daughter (Mary Claire) lived at 419 South Lehigh Street with her widowed grandmother Mary Kalb. (George Kalb had preceded his wife in death on 25 Feb 1930 at age 52.)

On 21 Jan 1945 when Margaret was in her fourth day of post-op recovery, her youngest daughter wrote her a letter which George Holdorf hand-delivered to his wife. Hospital rules did not permit young children to visit with patients and Mary Claire had not seen her mother in two weeks.

Tragically, there were post-op complications and Margaret's condition worsened. A blood clot traveled undetected to her lung and just four days after the date of her daughter's letter, she was gone.

Margaret Holdorf passed away at 11:10 PM on Thursday, 25 Jan 1945 while still an inpatient at South Baltimore General Hospital. The immediate cause of death was cited as "right sided heart failure due to pulmonary infarction." She had lived only 38 years, 3 months and 27 days.

Funeral services were Monday morning, 29 Jan 1945 at Lilly & Zeiler Inc. at Eastern Avenue and Wolfe Street. Requiem High Mass followed at Sacred Heart Church at 9:00 AM after which the young, married mother of three was laid to rest in Baltimore's Oak Lawn Cemetery.

In 1989 the flat headstone that simply said "Mother" above Margaret F. Holdorf's name and birth/death years was replaced with a companion upright stone to include her middle daughter Geraldine Holdorf Storck who died unexpectedly on 27 Aug 1989 at age 60.

Margaret's husband George C. Holdorf died on 9 Nov 1965 and is buried at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia with his second wife, Frances (nee Childress) Carwile Holdorf (15 Dec 1903 to 9 Jul 1987) whom he married on 29 Mar 1952 (and who was as wonderful a stepmother as Mary Bonjonia had been to Margaret Kalb).
