Wallace O. Thompson, 76, of Arlington, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Kennard. A private burial will follow at the Arlington Cemetery.

There is no visitation; however, family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington.

Wallace O. “Wally” Thompson was born May 6, 1933, in Strathcona, Minn., to Oliver and Bertha (Sjsvold) Thompson. He grew up on the family farm near Strathcona and was a 1951 graduate of Crookston (Minn.) high school. In 1967, he graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in civil engineering. He worked in construction and lived in several cities and towns, but most of the time, he worked in Bismarck, N.D. He moved to Arlington in 1967 and was employed by Peter Kiewit Construction Co. in Omaha for approximately four years. In 1980, he started Thompson Construction Co. in Arlington, which he operated until retiring in 2006.

He was a member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Kennard, where he served as church trustee; was a member of the Arlington Lions Club and the Association of General Contractors of America. He was a former Boy Scout leader.

On May 8, 1954, he married Norma “Jean” Tietgen at Herrick. S.D. She survives him as do three sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Ellen Thompson, and Steven and Rhonda Thompson, all of Arlington; and Kelly and Jodie Thompson of Fremont; a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Mike French of Arlington; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Bev Thompson of Fargo, N.D., and Roman and Nadine Thompson of Strathcona; sister-in-law, Elsie Thompson of Roseau, Minn.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Birdin and Lyle Thompson; six sisters, Addie Thompson, Agnes Engelhard, Eleanor Alexander, Lorraine Walters, Vernice Draeving, and LaVerne Olson.

Memorials are suggested to Emmaus Lutheran Church or the Arlington Lions Club.
