Hannah Bates Askew, daughter of revolutionary war soldier and Illinois pioneer William Bates, married Col. Josiah T. Askew on March 22nd,1821. It was the first recorded marriage of Jersey county, Illinois. Her mother was Elizabeth Collins who died in 1822. Hannah had 8 children by Josiah before his death in 1845. She lived on the Askew Hollow farm until her death on August 17th, 1864. The remaining children buried her on the Askew Hollow farm with her husband.
