Thomas Charles Cummins was born in the townlands of Ballyclovan west and orth of Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland on March 21, 1869 to Edmond Cummins 1828-1901 and to Mary Tobin 1837-1902. Thomas' grandfather was also Thomas Cummins 1800-1848 (died during the famine) and Hanora Whelan 1800-1865. The oldest child was also named Hanora (Sr. Evangelist Cummins OSF 1867-1936, Thomas was the 2nd child, (the next 3 kids died at birth)3.Patrick 1871, 4.James 1873, 5.John 1874; #6 was Patrick 1874-1951 and #8 John 1879-1958 both stayed single and on the farm until death. #7 was James Cummins 1876-1962 who married and died in Colorado.
Tom Cummins was engaged to Katherine "Kate" Kelly 1865-1903 of Callan and in 1889 they left (with his sister, Nora), for the USA. They went to Burlington Junction, MO to the home of Tom's uncle Patrick and Annie Cummins and his Aunt Mary and James Tobin.
Tom and Kate were married on Sep 26, 1895 at St. Patrick's Church in Maryville, MO by Fr. Pembroke. For a while they lived in the old tornado damaged home of Jim and Mary Tobin near Burlington Junction where their first born, Edmond John Cummins 1895-1954 was born on Jul 23, 1895 who later became a priest and was ordained June 1919 at Conception Abbey, MO. Tom bought land north and east of Maryville, MO and Mary Rosalie Cummins was born there on June 27, 1897 followed by the birth of Therese Cummins on Feb 6, 1899 (who became Sr. Cleopha Cummins, OSB at Clyde MO).
When Therese was only 4 years old, Tom's wife entered St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, MO and died on Jun 29, 1903 and was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Maryville.
The 3 young children went to Tom's sister, Mary and James Tobin in Burlington Junction, for the summer and then in the fall the 3 children lived at St. Francis Hospital with the Franciscan sisters for many years.
Tom's younger brother Jim Cummins (10 years younger) came from Callan and stayed with Tom for a while and returned to Ireland but later went to Nebraska and then Colorado and married Alma Allen in 1910 and raised a family in Sterling, CO.
27 years after Tom's wife, Kate, died in 1903, Tom married Loretta Gorman 1897-1969 on Oct 20, 1930 in Maryville, MO when Tom was 61 years old; they had a daughter Anna Marie Cummins Bartram on Feb 9, 1934 when Tom was 64. Tom lived to be 88 and died Aug 25, 1957 in Maryville and is buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Maryville, MO. His wife Loretta died about 12 years later on Mar 15, 1969 and is also buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery. Tom's son Edmond died as a priest in 1954 in Shelbina, MO 3 years before Tom. His daughter, Mary, married Arthur Carroll III 1886-1978 and lived on a farm near Mound City,, MO. His daughter, Sr. Cleopha OSB died Oct 8, 1989 at age 90 in Clyde, MO.
His daughter Ann married Max Bartram in 1955 in Maryville, MO and have lived in Colorado.
Many records indicate Thomas's middle name as Joseph since someone said all men in Ireland have the middle name of Joseph. His baptism record has no middle name. His daughter said his middle name was Charles, thus Thomas Charles Cummins!
