George W. Close, son of John G. Close Sr. and Francis Swift, was born on April 23, 1801 in Kentucky,. He married Rebecca Beams, daughter of Fielding Thomas Beams and Jeldon Holdzclaw, on February 23, 1820 in Green County, Kentucky. They had at least ten children. The first five were born in Green County, Kentucky; John G, born December 4, 1820, Fielding B., born June 26, 1822, Frances Elizabeth, born September 4, 1824; William B., born March 12, 1826, and James G., born 1830. On September 30, 1829, they sold their property in Green County to John D. Spain. They moved to Menard County (Sangamon County), Illinois and had at least five more: McGrady born October 15, 1833, Gabriel born 1836, Lewis W., born August 12, 1838, Mary Elizabeth., born January 30, 1840, and George Robert born July 25, 1843. Rebecca made her own sausage and canned her own food and preserved their own meat. She had wheat that she ground for their use. George died on March 24, 1871 at the age of 70 years, 1 month, and 1 day and is buried in the Close Cemetery, Madison County, Iowa. It is thought that after the settlement of the estate, Rebecca went to live with her son, George Robert. (1880 Census, Missouri, Carroll County, Bogard Township shows Rebecca living with George Robert and his family. ) George's will is recorded at Winterset, Iowa and directs all his goods to be sold. Notices were printed in the Winterset Madisonian. These notices were sent to the children out of state. John, William, and McGrady's widow were in Menard County, Illinois. Frances was in Carroll County, Missouri and Mary was in Adams County, Iowa. (On the list of heirs it states that John G. was in Mason County, Illinois.
