A graduate of the Class of 1932 At West Point, he was a pilot and test pilot in the Army Air Corps, going into the United States Air Force when it was formed in 1947. He retired in 1967.

Major General Anderson served in the China/Burma Theater in World War II. His decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with oak leaf cluster, and the Philippine Distinguished
Service Star.
