Janet Charlotte Steen, age 71, of Enid, Oklahoma, formerly of Iberia, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2009, at her residence. She was born on December 4, 1937, in Iberia, daughter of Waldo Amos and Eula Popplewell Steen.
Janet was raised and educated in Iberia and attended Missouri Baptist School of Nursing where she received her RN Diploma. She was commissioned in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and served as a flight nurse. Later she became an Air Force Recruiter. Janet was a self-taught genealogist. She lived throughout the United States and was a resident of Enid, Oklahoma for the past two years.
Janet is survived by two brothers, Sherril Steen and wife Alice of Weatherford, Texas and James Steen and wife Bella of Eldon; four sisters, Carol Elseman and husband Louis of Barnett, Alice Tyler and husband Robert of College Park, Maryland, Marylin Whitaker and husband Rex of Iberia, and Eula Maye Bond and husband Wyeth of California; three aunts, Phyllis Steen, Lucille Steen, and Elva Steen; 22 nieces and nephews, 46 great-nieces and nephews; and 14 great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Geraldine Atwell; and one brother, Roger Steen.
Visitation will be from 6 -8 P.M. on Friday, January 9, 2009, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. A private family graveside service will be held in Williams Cemetery, near Iberia. Rev. Louis Elseman will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Williams Cemetery or to the Miller County Historical Society.
