Octavia E. Beach, 105, a former secretary to the Amherst town supervisor and one of the oldest residents of Williamsville, died Tuesday (April 30, 1996) in Williamsville Manor Nursing Home after a short illness.
Born Octavia Wahl in Buffalo, she was a graduate of Masten Park High School and had lived in Williamsville since 1908. From 1908 to 1916, she managed a family business, the Williamsville Home Bakery, at the corner of Main and Grove streets.
She married Elmer J. Beach in 1920 and was widowed in 1931. In the 1940s, she was a secretary with the C&M Construction Co. in Williamsville. During the 1950s, she served as secretary to Amherst Supervisor Eduard Metz.
Active in community and public affairs, she founded the Williamsville Child Study Club in 1928 and served as its first president. In the 1930s, she held various offices in the Williamsville High School PTA. During the 1950s and 1960s, she was an officer of the Williamsville Study Club, a literary group.
She maintained a lifelong interest in her flower garden and was known for her energy, her concern for others and her commitment to humanitarian causes.
Surviving are two sons, James of Williamsville and Dale of Latham; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private. Interment will be in Williamsville Cemetery.
