Jesse William Givens, 102, of Sterling, died Dec. 31, 2002, in Sterling. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 18, 2003, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with services concluding at the funeral home. The Rev. Derek DeToni-Hill will be officiating.
Mr. Givens was bornNov. 29, 1900. to John Lee and Elizabeth (Rubottom) Givens in Hutsonville, Ill. At the age of two weeks his family moved by covered wagon to East Prairie, Mo. When he was 19, the family moved to Sterling, where he resided until his death.
On Oct. 18, 1925, he married Opal Brown in Sterling. She died Oct. 16, 1996.
Mr. Givens worked for the Burlington Railroad for 33 years, retired and became the building superintendent for the Christ United Methodist Church for 10 years. He also worked at the Walters-Chaney Funeral Home for several years.
He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, Odd Fellows Lodge and Burlington Northern Veterans.
Mr. Givens is survived by his daughter-in-law Carol Givens, Peachtree City. Ga.; grandchildren Mark Givens, Tampa, Fla., and Cathy Tereshinski, Athens, Ga.; and great-grandchildren Joseph and John Tereshinski, both of Athens.
He was preceded in death by his wife; sons Herbert Givens and Richard Givens; and 11 brothers and sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Christ United Methodist Church.
