J. A. Kendrick was a rich merchant in Americus. During the traditional New Year's receptions in Americus, the Kendricks are one of the families who receive visitors. Samuel Hawkins notes that the finance committee of the Baptist Church holds a meeting at the Kendrick home. J. A. Kendrick and Sons, which is later known successively as Kendrick & Wheatley, T. Wheatley, Wheatley & Ansley, and Charles L. Ansley, is a forerunner of the modern department store and ultimately fell victim to the stock market crash of 1929.
