Family History:

Jeremiah Coats was married first to Mary McIntosh in Perry County, KY., now Breathitt County. The family then moved to southern Indiana, where they lived until about 1839-1840. The family then moved to Ozark County in about 1839-1840. They first lived on Fox Creek in the Denlow or Champion area. By 1842, it is believe the family had settled at Old Vera Cruz where Mr. J.C. Vineyard now lives. Jeremiah and Mary Ann lived the rest of their lives there and are buried there. There are gravestones.

The first post office in what is now Douglas County, was called Red Bud, established in 1848, where Mr. Vineyard now lives. Robert Hicks was the postmaster until July 6, 1859, when the name was changed to Vera Cruz and Jeremiah Coats was made postmaster, serving until May 3, 1866.

Mary McIntosh Coats died Jan 3, 1870, and is buried at Old Vera Cruz. About 1876, Jeremiah then 71, married Celia Haynes Nance, a young widow of about 21, with two children, Thomas J. Nance and Angeline Nance. To this marriage was born Andrew J. "Jack", and Emmaline.

Jeremiah died Dec 1, 1879, and is buried beside his first wife, Mary Ann, at Old Vera Cruz. Jeremiah served during the Civil War in Company H., 46th Regt. of the MO. INF from Aug 17, 1864, to March 9, 1865. His age at enlistment was given as 44, as was the age of several older men in his company. Little is know if Jeremaih was involved with the Vera Cruz conflict.

Celia married Zachariah Hitchcock on Nov 16, 1882. She later married Harrison M. Elliot and A. B. Smith. She died in 1921, and is buried at Brushy Knob with her fourth husband Harrison M. Elliot. There is a gravestone.
