Serm was relocating from Smith Ferry, Texas to Rockland, Texas and needed someone to run his businesses in Smith Ferry. He sent Jeffie to business school in Beaumont, Texas so that he could do just that. Not long after completing school and returning to Smith Ferry, Jeffie cut his foot while working at the sawmill. It became gangerenous and he died. The death hit the family very hard.
