Buried in Block 3 Plot 33.Lars Olsen Bergsgaard was born on the farm Bergsgaard in Aal, Hallingdal, Norway on the 17 Mar 1845 to parent Sidsel Bergsgaard. He was baptized in the same year and confirmed in 1859 in Fluber Søndre Land by Pastor Peter Aabel. He was united in marriage to Agnethe Andersdatter Tranby on 10 Jan 1871. They lived in this area of Norway with the 1875 Norwegian census placing them in Vesteraas, Fluberg, Søndre Land with their three children namely Peder Larsen born in 1871, Ole Andreas Larsen born in 1873 and Gunda Larsdatter born in 1874. They also had his mother, Sissel or Sidsel living with them. The family immigrated to the United States in the fall of 1885 and came to Spring Grove, MN where they lived until the spring of 1888,when he came to the Viking area of Benson County, ND. He first built his family a sod house and in 1893 his daughter, Gunda, was married to Nels Nelson in this soddy. Later he built a wood frame home directly across the road from his sod house. His wife Agnethe Tranby Bergsgaard preceded him in death on 10 May 1892. He had in all nine children, one daughter who died in infancy in Norway, John or Johan Bergsgaard who in died in Viking in 1902 and the following seven children who survive him: Peter Bergsgaard of Spring Grove, MN; Ole Andreas Larsen Bergsgaard of Maddock, ND; Mrs. Nels J. (Gunda) Nelson of Maddock, ND; Miss Aagot Bergsgaard and Mrs. Albert Sundet of Maddock, ND; Otto Bergsgaard of Manfred, ND; and Mrs. Helmer Sundet of Williston, ND. Also surviving him are 46 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Mr. Bergsgaard was taken sick with pneumonia during the second week of February and died peacefully in the faith of his Savior on Saturday afternoon on 19 Feb at 4:30 p. m. Funeral services were conducted at the home and at Viking Lutheran Church by Rev. Lono on Wednesday 23rd of February. Interment was made at the Viking Cemetery. Active pallbearers were six grandson: Albert Nelson, Benjamin Nelson, Lawrence Bergsgaard, Carl Nelson, Leif Nelson and Clarence Sundet. The following acted as honorary pallbearers: Rasmus Wisnes, N. E. Gullerud, Andrew Nelson, Sam Morken, Andrew Faleide and Abraham Faleide. Granddaughters acted as flower girls: Ragna Nelson, Agnethe Bergsgaard and Constance Sundet.

His mother was a satter girl who cared for livestock from the valley farms during the summer months when they were driven into the mountains to reach pastures. His father was Ole Olson of southern Saehl. Ole Olson was born on 24 Sep 1819 and was married to Gunhild Knudsdatter Haug. She was born on 29 Nov 1820. He bought the small farm of "Baera" and they lived there to 1861, when they emigrated to the United States. Ole and Gundhild had four children, who would be half brothers and sisters to Lars O. Bergsgaard. They were Guri Olsdatter born 10 Sep 1848, Ole Olson born 18 Jul 1852, Knud Olson born 28 Feb 1855 and Haldis Olsdatter born 28 Feb 1858.
