Melvin was an ordained Baptist Minister, he was graduated from William Jewell College and enrolled in the Student's Army Training Corps (1919). He did the Sermon for his Mother's funeral and never preached again. He became a truck driver and had a bad wreck. After that he came to Kansas City, Missouri and opened up a shop called Mel's Clutch and Brake. Later in life he moved his shop and changed the name to Kay-Cee Rebuilders, where he worked until his death.
