Nathan E. "Bud" Merchant, 86, long time area auctioneer and livestock businessman, died Saturday evening, May 19, 1990, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness.
Mr. Merchant was born October 8, 1903, in Garrison, a son of Edward and Elizabeth Robinson Merchant. He had his early schooling in the Garrison schools and September 2, 1926, he married Lula Stiegelmeyer near Vinton.
She preceded him in death November 22, 1976. April 2, he married Anne Hollenbeck in Vinton. They have made their home in Vinton and now live at 1506 Washington Drive.
Mr. Merchant built the former Vinton sale barn and in addition to farming was a longtime auctioneer and livestock businessman in Vinton and surrounding communities. He was a former member of the Pratt Creek Church and for many years has been a member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association.
In addition to his wife Anne, Vinton, Mr. Merchant is survived by one son, Harold Merchant, Blairstown; one daughter, Inez Huffman, Phoenix, AZ; four brothers, Carl Merchant, rural Vinton; Joe Merchant, Garrison, and Woodrow and Jerry Merchant, both of Vinton; three sisters, Carol Carson, Oregon, Mary Walker; Vinton, and Winifred Landuyt of Blairstown; six grandchildren; seven,
great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Elizabeth Merchant, his step-mother, Nora Merchant, his first wife, Lula; four brothers, Walter, in infancy; Leland, Richard and Willard; three sisters, Dorothy, Vera and Margaret.
