The Reverend John W. Atkinson was born on a Fentress County farm February 23, 1892, one of seven children. His father. Wilburn P. Atkinson was a local preacher and. as Huch, served churches for a number of years.
John Atkinson was a many-talented man. In fact, all that he did, he did well. He was a great outdoorsman, loved to hunt and fish, an excellent gardener, and a practical veterinarian for his neighbors without charge. He was always rendering kind deeds to neighbors and parishioners, helping deliver a baby one time in an emergency.
He served 33 years in the Tennessee and Holston Conferences as an ordained Supply Pastor (now known as lay pastor). John was a special friend of Sgt. Alvin York, and was at one time his mother's pastor.
He was the father of eight children who are yet living. His surviving wife is Mrs. Lillie Allgood Atkinson.
He served across the years for a small salary, and he would supplement the same with farming and odd jobs.
Another thing he liked to do was sing. The last song that he and his brother, George, sang together as a duet was "Hold to God's Unchanging Hand." He continued doing that until he quietly slipped away in death, June 3, 1974. The funeral service was held at Ketron Memorial Church, Kingsport. Officiating were: J. Ray Stuart, H. H. Daugherty, and James N. Walter. On June 6 at Spring Chapel, Jamestown, he was laid to rest in the Spring Chapel Cemetery
