INMAN, SC-- Sidney Edgar Hawkins, Jr. was born March 11, 1924 in Spartanburg, SC, and was a graduate of Spartanburg High School. He was the son of Sidney E. Hawkins, Sr. and Ema Lanny Hawkins both of Gaffney, SC.
He is survived by a nephew, Ken Turner and wife Nadine Turner of Boiling Springs, SC; a son, Wayne Hawkins and wife Kathy of Inman; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a very special friend, T.
Mr. Hawkins was a disabled American Veteran and longtime POW in World War II where he proudly served in the 8th Air Force as part of the B-24 Liberator Squadron, where he defended our country and Allies from Hitler's communistic movement. He was also one of the last known 8- Ballers alive, which was an elite group of Air Combat Warriors. Mr. Hawkins was shot down over Germany twice while bombing Hitler's oil refineries and held in three different Prisoner of War camps. He also is one of the few survivors of Hitler's 80-Day Death March where he walked 613 miles in the snow in 80 days. During Mr. Hawkins time as a prisoner he was starved and beaten many times, but would never give in and would only give his name, rank, and serial number! Mr. Hawkins is a true American World War II Hero, where he went to War at age 17 and went from being a boy out of high school to becoming a man overnight.
Thank you Uncle Sid.
