Aug. 15, 1861: Enlisted for 3 years(at age 16)in 9th Michigan Infantry in Coldwater, MI into Company G,
July 13,1862: Captured along with 6 companies his regiment (A,B,C,G,H,K),4 companies of the Kentucky 4th Cavalry, B battery light artillery, the 3rd Minnesota Infantry, and 3 company's of the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry in Murfreesboro, TN by Confederate Cavalry forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest.
July 15,1862: Paroled with other enlisted members in Warren County Tennessee at a camp about 2 miles south of McMinnville, TN. It was common practice, particularly early in the war, for prisoners to be paroled on their honor not to engage in war activities until they were exchanged, (man for man, rank for rank) with prisoners from the other side.
July 27, 1862:Arrived at Camp Chase, Ohio
Aug. 7, 1862: Discharged at Camp Chase, Ohio under Surgeons Order(under authority of General Order 36, 1862) for being "underage" and for "deformity of the left arm, following a fracture received before enlistment" and "was never[Constituted?]so as to endure military service"
Aug. 27, 1862:Officially exchanged and free to engage in military activities

January 8, 1864: Enlisted for 3 years(age 19)in 11th Michigan Cavalry in Coldwater, MI in to Company M. Qualified for a cash bounty due to re-enlisting as a veteran, paid $62
Aug. 24, 1864:Promoted to Corporal
March 18, 1865: Promoted to Sergeant
July 20, 1865: Transferred to company C, 8th Michigan Cavalry
Sept. 22, 1865: Mustered out in Nashville TN.
