On December 10, 1944, PT-323 and PT-327 with two other boats, were on patrol near San Jose on Mindoro. The PT Boats were attacked by four Japanese Zekes, with two making kamikaze suicide attacks.
One plane made a kamikaze attack and crashed into PT-323 amidship. LTJG Herbert Stadler and Ensign William I. Adelman were killed. 11 other crew members were wounded. PT-323 was the first PT Boats sunk by kamikaze attack during World War II.
